How to Choose a New Road Bike
There is no single best road bike. The right one is the bike that fits you properly, suits the roads you ride and does what you want it to do.
It is easy to get caught up comparing weights, groupsets and frame materials. Those details matter, but they come after the bigger questions: where will you ride, how do you want the bike to feel and what position can you comfortably hold?
What sort of riding will you do?
Start with the riding you actually do most often, rather than the ride you might do once a year. A bike for fast bunch rides and racing will feel quite different from one designed for long days, rough roads or relaxed weekend riding.

These categories overlap. Plenty of modern race bikes are comfortable enough for long days, while a good endurance bike can still be very fast. Use the labels as a starting point, not a strict rule.
Fit comes before specification
A more expensive bike in the wrong size is still the wrong bike. Two models carrying the same size label can have noticeably different reaches, stack heights and handling, so choosing from height alone is not always enough.
Your proportions, flexibility, current riding position and the way you want to use the bike all help determine the right size. If you fall between sizes, we look at the complete geometry and the position we can build around it rather than automatically going larger or smaller.
If you already own a bike, bring it in or send us the model, size and setup. Knowing what currently works, and what does not, gives us a much better starting point.
Carbon
Most performance road bikes use carbon because the frame can be shaped and tuned for aerodynamics, stiffness, weight and ride quality. Not all carbon frames ride the same, though. How the frame is designed matters more than the material name on its own.
Groupsets and gearing
The groupset covers most of the parts responsible for shifting, braking and transferring power to the rear wheel. Moving up the range generally brings lower weight and a more refined finish, but it does not transform a bike that is otherwise poorly suited to you.
Mechanical shifting is simple and cost-effective. Electronic shifting is fast, consistent and allows different button layouts and control options. Both work well when properly set up, so the choice often comes down to budget and preference.
Do not overlook gearing. Lower climbing gears are useful on Auckland's short, repeated climbs and make longer or steeper days more manageable. We would rather put you on gearing you can use every week than a larger top gear chosen only because it looks more race-focused.
Brakes, tyres and wheels
Hydraulic disc brakes
Hydraulic disc brakes give strong, predictable braking in dry and wet conditions. They also work well with the wider tyres now used on most current road bikes.
Tyres
Tyre choice has a bigger effect on comfort and confidence than many riders expect. A wider tyre at the right pressure can roll quickly while offering more grip and taking the sting out of rough chipseal. Make sure the frame has enough clearance for the tyres you are likely to use.
Wheels
Wheels can change the way a bike accelerates, holds speed and handles in crosswinds. They are also easy to upgrade later. If the budget is fixed, we normally recommend getting the frame, fit and gearing right first rather than compromising those areas for a deeper set of wheels.
Think about the complete cost
The advertised price may not be the final cost of getting the bike ready to ride. Depending on what you already have, allow for pedals, shoes, bottle cages, lights, a computer mount, spare tubes or tubeless setup and any fit changes.
When comparing two bikes at a similar price, look at:
- Which frame and geometry fit you better
- Whether the gearing suits your regular roads
- The wheels and tyres supplied with the bike
- Whether the cockpit can be adjusted without replacing expensive integrated parts
- Parts availability, servicing and local support
Complete bike or custom build?
A complete bike usually offers the best value and is the easiest way to buy a well-balanced package. For most riders, it is the right place to start.
A frameset build makes sense when you already know exactly what you want, have parts you would like to reuse or want to choose every detail. It also gives us the opportunity to select the cockpit, gearing, wheels and saddle around you from the beginning.
A few questions worth asking
- Where will I ride this bike most often?
- Do I want a low race position or something easier to hold for several hours?
- Does the bike fit me now, and can it be adjusted as my riding changes?
- Will the gearing suit my fitness and local climbs?
- Is there enough tyre clearance for the roads I ride?
- Am I paying for upgrades I will genuinely notice?
- What else needs to fit within the total budget?
